Here are some good examples of what you can do with WeGif. The WeGif Team made some really high quality gifs experimenting with cameras and light. Hopefully we will see some more of these gifs, since they came out so well.

3.7Design and AjaxLine Talkin Gifs

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Two articles on making animated gif menus using css.
3.7designs has an overview of using css and gifs to animate menus.
AjaxLine article talks about using CSS and animated gifs to animate menu.

“GIFs can still be a very powerful tool, and the fact that they have been long forgotten gives me an opportunity to brainstorm what you can do with them.” 3.7

“There was a time when the ability to animate GIF’s made web sites a little more fun… or horribly obnoxious. It seems that no one really harnessed the power of animated GIFs, and today the only place they seem to be used are in banner advertisements when flash isn’t available.” -AjaxLine

WeGif understands that no one really has harnessed the power of animated gifs and thats why we have created wegif.com.

The 3g Iphone is still not my N95.

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

There has been an incredible amount of talk leading up to the new iphone release and there is still a strong buzz in the air. I do have to admit i am still not satisfied with the outcome of the release.
For the past several weeks i have heard the 9th of June several times, mostly from friends holding out for their brand to release something that makes them proud. A response to the silence caused by their realization that my N95 provides a greater amount of satisfaction then their iphone.

So i watched the release and I am not satisfied.
Michael over at TechCrunch wrote up a review on it, but it didn’t sell me. I understand he was saying about Technology, but i must admit the first time i went to Disney World i was disappointed. I grew up less then an hour from Cedar Point, home of the largest, fastest roller coasters. Disney World just didnt have those rides.

Brass Tacks
Yes, you finally have GPS good work. It should have come with GPS in the first one.
You are 37% faster than my N95, thats not an impressive figure. Twice as fast is a nice figure. Telling someone you can download something one and a third times faster not so impressive Steve.

Camera
The camera lens is an easy KO blow for the iphone, its obvious. Wired did a comparison of 5mp Camera phones last month, Iphone wasn’t listed, and still wont be listed if they do it again. Why? It doesn’t have a 5 Mega Pixel Camera.

Adobe Flash ?
Do you have it….

Speakers
If you get a chance play the same song on an Iphone and N95. Turn them Up, at about 40% you will overpower the iphone at full blast. I went camping last weekend with my family, and my sister told me to bring a radio. I told her i was bringing my phone, she thought i was was joking.

So i ask this, what do you want your phone to do?
For me thats simple. I want it to be the only device in my pocket.
No ipod, no camera, no gps, just my phone.
Thats why i have an N95.

More reasons not by an Iphone

What is nice is that while flash doesnt play on Iphones, at least Gifs do.

If you use photoshop and what to see a thorough explanation on how to make an animated gif using the program check out the link below. One good advantage right now in using photoshop is the centering tool. WeGif is currently working on an auto-centering system and we will let you know when it is released.

Hipster Runoff talking Gif

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Over on Hipster Runoff they are talking gifs, and i couldnt help but agree. “Twirling Hat Gifs are important tools for myspace personal branding.” I made my own twirling hat Gif in march of 2007.

Even if you arent a fan of twiling hats, the fact remains that gifs are an important tool for myspace as well as personal branding. One of my personal favorite gifs that i had as my myspace logo for quite some time. The Kicks I Float.

Change in Delta, Making a Sensible Gif

Friday, May 30th, 2008

No, I am not talking about the friendly skies.

I am talking the mathematical term Δ, representing a change in any variable. As the change between any two given frames increases the amount of time each frame is shown needs to increase proportionally to the change in Δ.

For example if two frames are very similar with only a slight change in the position of the subject, the time duration required to understand the difference can be relatively low. If the frames are of two completely different subjects then the change in Δ would be relatively high and .: require a much longer freeze time on each frame.

When making a good quality gif it is important to keep in mind the change in Δ between any two given frames, this will help you make better use of the time controls.

Gif Styles

Friday, May 30th, 2008

There are several popular styles of gifs in use today, the most prevalent are covered quickly below.

3D Gifs

Mugur’s favorite type of gifs are those that have a certain amount of parallax. These gifs customarily change their vantage point while keeping the same target centered. The easiest way to create this trick is to move the camera to the left or right, while keeping the camera focused on one central point. If you keep the frame count and total change in delta of the image to a lower level you can very easily achieve this effect without causing nausea.

Another fun 3d effect is to again keep the camera on a fixed center point, however move the vantage point around the object. Since the speed of motion 3D is usually high due to a low level of change in the contents of any two given frames many people forget to create a time gap between the first and last frame. There are really two techniques that can be utilized to create a still smooth gif. One the user can duplicate the middle frames and reverse them: for example 1,2,3,4,5 4,3,2. By duplicating the middle frames you have a coherent flow of information, without a jump, as is the case from 5 to 1. One other technique is to freeze the last frame for at least a half of a sec, this provides the information that the action has been completed. Also when the frame jumps to one to start over the change isn’t as drastic if you also freeze that frame for an extra half a second.

Stop Motion Gifs

With any motion best demonstrated practice is to have a least a change of 1 tenth of a second aka 0.1seconds. Anything faster than 1/10th of second becomes redundant.

Slide Show Gifs

In order to create a quality slide show gif you have to make sure that you are changing the frames very slowly, at least around 1 frame a sec. The gif maker allows for up to three seconds per frame. If the gif has a high level of change then the amount of time needs to be increased.
